Founded In 1874
The Foyer Saint Georges is a not-for-profit organization owned and managed by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Beirut, under the patronage of His Eminence Metropolitan Elias Audi. It is classified and licensed as a long stay hospital by the Ministry of Public Health and located in Rmeil, Achrafieh adjacent to Saint Georges Hospital University Medical Center.
The Foyer Saint Georges was established in 1874 by a small group of volunteers who extended a helping hand to the members of their community. Since 1980, the vision of His Eminence stresses that enough care and attention should be secured to the elderly population, who should be able to reside at the home for as long as possible, with the best quality of life. This became the Foyer’s main scope of action.
The Foyer receives all individuals from the age of 65 years and above without any discrimination in terms of religion, race and nationality. It is committed to providing the best quality of medical nursing, geriatric, holistic care and social services to the elderly. Peace and dignity are at the core of the Foyer’s values which strives to provide a safe and comfortable environment.
On August 4, 2020, Foyer Saint Georges was severely hit by the port blast that destroyed the eastern district of Beirut. The building’s skeleton is a reinforced concrete frame (columns, beams, slabs and staircases) in all the floors. The structural integrity of the building was visually inspected after the blast, and no structural damages were discovered in slabs, columns or beams. However, huge damages occurred to the architectural, mechanical and electrical networks. The fourth and fifth floors were reopened on March 2021, with a total capacity of thirty patients.
To accommodate all the residents who were at the Foyer before the blast and to maximize its capacity, given the increasing need for its services due to the harsh economic crisis which has led to the increasing cost of home care and electric power, the rehabilitation and remodeling of the existing building has become a necessity.
The Foyer Saint Georges strongly believes that every elderly person deserves a comfortable and most importantly a happy life. Thus, along with the rehabilitation project of the existing building, an extension project mainly including the injection of new scopes and functions to the existing Foyer became a priority. The project aims to build another adjacent building that will house many new facilities to engage different generations and ensure the best life quality the Foyer is committed to provide for its elderly.
